Bordeaux Wine from Independent French Estates

If you've been searching for Bordeaux that goes beyond the supermarket shelf, you've found it.

Three French Vines is New Zealand's home for authentic family-owned Bordeaux. Small-production wines from independent estates across the Right Bank, imported exclusively and delivered directly to your door anywhere in New Zealand.

Every bottle in our BDX range comes from a family who farms their own vineyards, makes their own wine in their own cellar, and puts their name behind every label. This is fundamentally different from the Bordeaux you see most often in New Zealand retailers. Much of what fills supermarket shelves and big-box wine sections is produced or blended by négociants—large trading houses that buy fruit or finished wine from hundreds of different growers across the region and package it under a generic "Bordeaux" label designed for volume and consistency. The result is reliable, affordable, and everywhere. But it is not the best Bordeaux has to offer.

Grower-made, family-owned Bordeaux is. And Three French Vines in New Zealand is one of the best places in the world to discover it.

Our Bordeaux Range

We represent four family-owned Bordeaux estates, each selected for the quality of their vineyards, the integrity of their farming, and the character of their wines. Together they span the Right Bank's key appellations: Pomerol, Saint-Émilion and Castillon. Plus a rare foray into white Bordeaux, and offer a remarkable range of styles. From mineral and precise white Bordeaux to soft, early-drinking Merlot, from second wines built for weeknight drinking to Grand Cru-level craft applied to more accessible cuvées.

Château Les Charmes-Godard 2020
Thienpont family property, of the same ilk behind Pavie Macquin, Le Pin, and a handful of other serious Right Bank names, but this one's the white project. Nicolas Thienpont bought the vineyard in 1988 specifically because of the old vines already in the ground, some now pushing 70+ years. It's a small parcel, hands-on winemaking, and it's been quietly proving for years that white Bordeaux from this side of the river deserves more attention than it gets. Sémillon-heavy, barrel-fermented, ready to go.

La Raison d'Hêtre 2022
Also Thienpont, the second wine off the younger vines and lower slopes of the same estate that makes L'Hêtre. This is the more everyday drinking version of the same philosophy.  Same clay-limestone dirt, same family hand on the winemaking, just less oak and less waiting around. Good one for people who want the Thienpont style without the Thienpont price tag or the ten-year cellar commitment.

Tempo d'Angélus 2023
Angélus is obviously a very big name, but this is the family (the de Boüard family) doing something new rather than resting on the Grand Vin. In 2017 they bought vineyard land out in Castillon, just a few kilometres from Saint-Émilion but a different price bracket entirely.  They built a dedicated winery just for this wine, separate from the main château. It's the de Boüards applying the same level of care to an earlier-drinking, better-value wine. Organic conversion underway on the vineyards too.

Ronan by Clinet 2020
Ronan Laborde runs Château Clinet in Pomerol.  Ronan is proper pedigree with multiple 100-point wines to his name.  This is his side project made for people who don't want to spend Pomerol money on a Tuesday night. Decanter and GQ have both called it out as one of the best value reds in Bordeaux, and it drinks like it: soft, easy, no attitude. Same winemaker, same standards, just a different job to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bordeaux 'family-owned' wine, and how is it different from big-name Bordeaux brands? Plus

Most Bordeaux you see in supermarkets and large retailers is produced or blended by négociants. These trading houses buy grapes or finished wine from hundreds of growers across the region and package it under a generic regional label. Every wine in our BDX collection comes from a single family estate that farms its own vineyards and makes its own wine in its own cellar. Same region, completely different approach.

Are these Bordeaux wines from the Right Bank or Left Bank? Plus

All four wines in this collection are Right Bank Bordeaux, from Pomerol, Saint-Émilion and the neighbouring Castillon appellation. Right Bank Bordeaux is typically Merlot-dominant, which tends to make these wines softer and more approachable earlier than Left Bank, Cabernet-heavy styles.

What grape varieties are used in these wines? Plus

The reds in this collection are Merlot-dominant blends, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon. Château Les Charmes-Godard is the exception—a white Bordeaux blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris.

Is there a white Bordeaux in this collection? Plus

Yes. Château Les Charmes-Godard 2020 is a barrel-fermented white Bordeaux made from old-vine Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, built to age and stand up to serious white Bordeaux from bigger-name appellations.

Which wine is the best value in this collection? Plus

Ronan by Clinet 2020 is our entry point—made by Ronan Laborde of Château Clinet in Pomerol, and named a top-value Bordeaux by both Decanter and GQ. It's approachable now and doesn't require cellaring.

Do these wines need to be cellared, or can they be drunk now? Plus

This range is curated for earlier drinking. Ronan by Clinet and Tempo d'Angélus are both designed to drink well within a few years of release. Château Les Charmes-Godard and La Raison d'Hêtre have more structure and can be held longer, but all four are enjoyable now.

What food pairs well with these Bordeaux wines? Plus

The reds suit roasted meats, lamb, duck and mushroom-based dishes. Château Les Charmes-Godard, the white, pairs well with scallops, sushi and sheep's milk cheeses—more versatile at the table than most white Bordeaux.

Do you deliver Bordeaux wine throughout New Zealand? Plus

Yes. Three French Vines ships this collection nationwide, direct to your door anywhere in New Zealand.

Why buy from Three French Vines instead of elsewhere? Plus

We import directly from these family estates rather than buying through large distributors, so you're getting wines that don't typically reach New Zealand retail shelves—chosen for who makes them, not for scale or brand recognition.

Can I order Bordeaux by the case? Plus

Yes, and we recommend it. Visit our Bulk Orders page for event and volume pricing.

Do you offer corporate or event Bordeaux supply? Plus

Yes. We supply our Bordeaux wines for weddings, gala dinners, corporate events, and private celebrations across New Zealand. Volume pricing is available for larger orders. Visit our Bulk Orders & Events page or Corporate Gifting page for more information.
